Since signing with Faber Music in 2011, Spanish composer Francisco Coll has gone from strength to strength. In his recent work, which takes in everything from huge orchestral statements to intricate miniatures, one finds an extraordinary maturity and versatility. Here is a composer with both a singular artistic vision and the sophisticated craft with which to realise it.

Recent works include a Harpsichord Concerto for Mahan Esfahani and Britten Sinfonia, the Four Iberian Miniatures for violin and chamber orchestra and Ceci n’est pas un Concerto, a surreal tragicomedy for soprano and ensemble premiered by Elizabeth Atherton and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group under Thomas Adès.

The coming months see UK and Spanish performances of Mural, Coll’s large orchestral piece originally composed for the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and Gustavo Gimeno, and the premiere of a Concerto Grosso for Cuarteto Casals and the National Orchestra of Spain under David Afkham.
